All trained ready to conquer R2R (Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon). My friends, a great group of 9, and I started out with smiles and goose bumps (only 38 degrees) at 4:30 in the morning. We were well trained; having done many training hikes, ready to go. We were having a blast. The sun was out and it started getting warm. Beauty everywhere! At Phantom Ranch the Ranger stated it was 110 Degrees in the shade. Most of us cooled off in the creek and off we went over the Colorado river on our way out.…
All was well until we rounded the corner and saw a safety blanket. We knew something was wrong. One of our friends was somewhat non-responsive and suffering from the heat. It got worse from there. We all worked together like a well oiled machine to take care of her as well as keeping the rest of the group safe. Our group went into action using everyone’s strengths (mom’s, nurse, caregiver, team leader). Our friend was life flighted out of the canyon and is now doing great, due to the great teamwork of my friends and the quick response of the Rangers. Our group is conquering R2R again in just a few short weeks.
